Born on the Farm
Amos S. Stoltzfus grew up Amish during the Great Depression, where “butchering day” was a family tradition. With twelve siblings, there were always plenty of hands to help as the family turned hogs into sausage, bacon, ham, and scrapple.
To Market, To Market
In 1954, Amos and his wife Mary began selling meats and Lancaster County goods at the New Castle Farmers Market in New Castle, Delaware. Business was slow at first, and Amos questioned how long they could keep going—until Mary encouraged him to “give it one more week.”
That one week became many successful years.
By 1966, the butcher shop had grown enough to add a small retail store. A family-style restaurant soon followed on the Stoltzfus homestead. As demand increased, the butcher shop expanded in both 1969 and 1971, eventually processing 45 hogs each week.
A Family Tradition
Amos’ sons later joined the business, and in 1996 his youngest son, Myron, stepped into leadership. Through the 1990s and 2000s, Stoltzfus Meats continued to expand its offerings and footprint.
In 2008, a new market stand opened at the New Castle Farmers Market, followed in 2009 by a new retail store in Intercourse, PA. “Amos’ Place,” a small restaurant located within the store, was added in honor of Amos after his passing in 2007.
The Tradition Continues
Today, Stoltzfus Meats is led by CEO Myron Stoltzfus and President Travis Rohrer. The company continues to craft high-quality meats in the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, using the same recipes and standards Amos established decades ago.
Stoltzfus Meats now supplies retail stores, market stands, and restaurants throughout the Mid-Atlantic region—including our original stand at the New Castle Farmers Market, where the hand-painted 1954 sign still hangs.
